Custom-coded websitevs. WordPress.

Custom-coded website or WordPress? Compare speed, security, maintenance, SEO and cost to decide which is right for your small business or band.

WordPress powers a huge share of the web, and for good reason: it’s flexible and familiar. But for many small businesses, bands and service brands, a hand-coded website is faster, safer and easier to live with. We’ve moved several clients, including Optimo Entertainment and Spark The Buzz itself, off WordPress. Here’s how the two compare.

Speed

A typical WordPress site loads a theme, a page builder and a stack of plugins on every page view. A custom-coded site ships only what the page needs. Faster pages keep visitors around, and speed is part of how Google evaluates your site.

Security and maintenance

WordPress sites need regular updates to the core, theme and every plugin, and outdated plugins are one of the most common ways sites get hacked. A static, hand-coded site has no database or admin login to attack and almost nothing to update. There’s simply less that can break.

Design freedom

Themes and page builders make it easy to look like everyone else. Custom code means the design can be exactly what your brand needs: unique layouts, motion, interactive features and booking flows built around your customers.

SEO

Both can rank well. The difference is how much control you have. With a custom build, titles, descriptions, page structure, structured data, sitemaps and load speed are all set up deliberately from day one, not bolted on with plugins.

Editing your content

This is WordPress’s biggest advantage: you can log in and edit pages yourself. If you publish blog posts daily or have a large team editing content, that matters. If your site changes a few times a month, having your agency handle updates is often simpler and keeps the site looking polished.

Cost

A WordPress site can be cheap to start, but premium themes, plugins, security tools and maintenance add up. A custom site is an upfront design-and-build investment, with lower running costs and fewer surprises afterwards.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose WordPress if you publish lots of content yourself and need a familiar editor.
  • Choose custom-coded if you want a fast, secure, distinctive site that’s built to convert visitors into bookings, orders and calls.
