Website or social media:which comes first?

Should a small business, band or event invest in a website or social media first? How the two work together, and where to start with a limited budget.

If you’re working with a limited budget, it’s tempting to pick one: a great website or an active social media presence. The truth is they do different jobs, and they work best together. Here’s how to decide where to start.

What social media does best

Social media is where people discover you. It builds awareness, shows your personality, keeps you top of mind and lets customers interact with you. It’s rented space, though: the platforms control who sees your posts, and the rules change constantly.

What your website does best

Your website is where people decide. It’s the one place you fully own, where you can explain exactly what you offer, show proof, answer questions and make it easy to book, buy or call. It’s also what shows up when someone searches for you on Google.

How they work together

Social media creates interest, and your website converts it. Every post, reel and ad should point somewhere. If that somewhere is slow, dated or confusing, the attention you worked for leaks away.

Where to start

  • No website, or a website you’re embarrassed by? Start there. A fast, clear site makes every future post and ad work harder.
  • A solid website but no traffic? Invest in consistent social media and content to bring people to it.
  • Both in place but not growing? Add promo video and targeted ads, and measure what actually drives inquiries.

The smart middle ground

Many businesses launch a focused website first, then add social media management and content once the foundation is in place. Because we do both, everything matches: the same look, the same message and the same goal.
